  3. What is stereotype and prejudice? Does it exist in your local culture? Give examples! (30 points)

Answers:
  1. The thing that is necessary is of course our knowledge of the foreign culture. Before we understand something, it is better if we know what it is. So it is with culture. Be it foreign culture or local culture, our knowledge will determine how much we can understand that culture. We can seek from several sources about the foreign culture, then we read. From there we will get more knowledge about foreign cultures. In essence, in my opinion, what we really need to avoid cultural conflict is more knowledge about that culture.
  2. I can define my culture with a foreign culture different from the values that we live. For example the value of marriage. In foreign cultures, living with a partner without ties is common. But in my local culture, it is considered against the rules. And for whether my local culture and foreign culture can be integrated or not, in my opinion it cannot. As I explained earlier, the value of marrying my local culture with foreign cultures is not in line. Even living together without marital ties is also not in line with the culture of the archipelago (Indonesia)
  3. Stereotype is a reflex assessment of a person towards another person based solely on the perception that a person concludes based on which group the other person can be categorized. And this often happens in my local culture.  my local culture is Batak. And as most people know, the Batak people are known for their loud voices, speaking like yelling, and the many traditional pickle events accompanied by songs and several musical instruments. Examples of stereotypes of people towards the Batak people are the Batak people who are good at singing, the Batak people are good at playing musical instruments (especially the Gondang-traditional Batak musical instrument).                                  Prejudice is a person's (negative or positive) judgment or opinion on another person or group. An example of good prejudice in my local (Batak) culture is: people often think that Batak people like to talk as they are because of their open-minded nature. Examples of prejudice are: when 2 people (mother and child) with Batak ethnic groups are chatting on the street, because the characteristic of Batak people is talking loudly, people think that they are fighting.

Comments

  1. Thanks for your explanation: good enough. I have some questions. What do you think about integration? Is it something good or bad? You said that our culture and foreign culture can not be integrated. Do you think that an integration is like an assimilation? How about acculturation? Let us be distinctive to define a particular word!
