1.In understanding foreign cultures, someone needs to understand well the cultures to avoid cultural conflicts. But, many people are failed to understand the values and customs of foreign cultures. According to your own idea please explain what do you need to have to understand foreign cultures to avoid cultural conflicts. (35 points)
First, we also know that to avoid cultural
conflicts when speaking, we should understand and have more understanding of
these foreign cultures, in this case, firstly I will find out about foreign
cultures through the internet, literature, films, and so on. There are so many
media that we can use in finding out foreign cultures. But the most important
thing is when we learn a new or foreign culture first we must have an open-minded mind and we have to appreciate and respect foreign cultures even though they are very different
from our culture. because culture is very diverse, you cannot claim that your culture is the best culture while foreign cultures are wrong. So, even though we know many things about foreign
cultures but we don't have an open mind and respect, that cultural conflicts will
still arise.
2. How do you define your local culture is different from foreign culture? Do you think local and foreign cultures need to be integrated? Please provide your reasons (35 points)
My local culture has major differences from a
foreign culture, because as we know culture is formed from many elements such
as religion, race, customs, social, art, regional location, geography, politics,
and other backgrounds, etc. From these elements, there will certainly be many
differences between my local culture and foreign cultures. For example, climate
factors that affect the way you dress. Religious factors that influence your perspective.
There are also many differences in parenting. In my local culture children live
with their parents until marriage because dependence on parents is considered
positive, but in the foreign culture, they leave home when they are eighteen because
they are taught to be independent and it is considered positive.
I think for some reason local culture and foreign culture need to be integrated because the existence of a foreign culture can cause various things. Foreign culture becomes good for national culture when foreign culture can provide cultural input under cultural personality. however, even though foreign cultures are well accepted and processed, we must not lose our own local culture. Therefore, self-preparation is necessary so that the foreign culture does not influence and gradually causes an identity crisis.
Stereotypes are opinions of a person based entirely on the views of the category to which that person may be classified that a lot of people believe represent a particular type of person or thing. Stereotypes are thought shortcuts that people intuitively perform to simplify complicated things and then assist to decide so fast. For example, In my local culture people have the perception that Minangnese is famous for their tradition of ”merantau”. so they have the stereotype that Minangnese will definitely leave their hometown to work out of Sumatera Barat or minangnese are very good at cooking because Padang Restaurant is very famous. Prejudice is a preconceived opinion or assumption of another person not based on reason or experience usually like a negative emotional attitude held toward members or a specific social group. For example, because there is an assumption that "people with Chinese ethnicity are successful because they are calculating and stingy", one might think that all Chinese people are stingy, thus hating all Chinese people. .
