1. 1. In understanding foreign cultures,
someone needs to undersatnd well the cultures to avoid cultural conflicts. But,
many people are failed to undersatnd the values and customs of foreign
cultures. According to your own idea, please explain what do you need to have
to understand to foreign cultures in order to avoid cultural conflicts!
Answer:
Cultural conflict in negotiations tends to occur for two main reasons. First,
it is very common when dealing with cultural differences, people rely on
stereotypes. Stereotypes are often pejorative (eg Italians are always late),
and can lead to distorted expectations about your colleague's behavior and
possibly harmful misinterpretations. You shouldn't assume cultural stereotypes
enter into negotiations.
A
second common reason for cross-cultural misconceptions is that we tend to
interpret the behavior, values and beliefs of others through the lens of our
own culture. To overcome this tendency, it is important to learn as much as
possible about the other side's culture. This means not only researching the
customs and behaviors of different cultures, but also by understanding why
people follow these customs and exhibit these behaviors in the first place. So
to avoid this we must:
1.
Respect for other cultures
2.
Eliminating the nature of considering one's own culture as the best culture
while other cultures are considered bad cultures
3.
Studying each other's culture between regions and cultures abroad, this is a
good thing to know the characteristics of each culture in order to avoid
conflict
2. 2. How do you define your local culture is
different from foreign culture? Do you think local and foreign cultures need to
be integrated? Please provide your reasons!
Answer:
My local culture is clearly very different from foreign culture. For example,
in the marriage procedure. I, who come from Batak Toba, have a very different
way of marriage from outside cultures. Because in the traditional Batak wedding
tradition there is a Tor-Tor event and there are also Ulos Batak clothing which
are clearly not owned by outside cultures.
And
does culture need to be integrated? I think there are several cultures that can
be integrated. however, not all of them need to be integrated. The only things
that need to be integrated are things that can be accepted by the two cultures,
which are not contradictory.
3. 3.What is stereotype and prejudice? Does
it exist in your local culture? Give examples!
Answer:
Stereotypes are decisions about a person based solely on group perceptions
where that person can be categorized or stereotypes are shortcuts to thinking
that are intuitively used by humans to simplify complex things and help in
making decisions quickly. And Prejudice is a pre-formed judgment or opinion.
Adverse or biased opinions are formed without reason alone or prior to adequate
knowledge.
I
think yes. For example, when there is a marriage between two tribes. Then it
will be discussed whether the event will follow the customs of the man or
woman. Then the conclusions drawn can be called stereotypes
