RINDI H PURBA (MID CROSS CULTURAL UNDERSTANDING)

1. Give your own idea / opinions about:
  • Culture is a characteristic of a group or area.  where this culture is the identity of the group or area that is passed down from generation to generation.  for example Batak culture in the southern Sumatra area, etc.
  • Interculture is a communication or interaction that exists between 2 or more people but with different cultural backgrounds.  In short, interculture is the communication of several people who have different cultures.  for example Batak culture communicates with Sundanese culture.
  • Cross culture is the study of how people with different cultural backgrounds communicate.  in short, cross culture is the study of interculture.
  • Multicultural is a term used to describe a person's view of the diversity of cultures that exist on earth.

2. Give one example of cultural conflict and offer the solution for its adjustment:
"Batak and Minang cultures that have different lineages.  Batak culture follows the father's lineage.  which means, the child will follow the line of his father's inheritance (from clan to inheritance).  while Minang follows the maternal lineage.  which means, the child will follow his mother's lineage (from clan to inheritance).  The Batak culture believes that the right to inheritance is a boy because a man will become the head of the household.  Minang culture considers that if it is a daughter who holds the inheritance, they believe that if the inheritance will not run out, it will only grow.  That's because when girls get married, they will get a living from their husbands.  which means the woman's inheritance will not be used continuously".
The solution: Tolerance.  whatever differences exist in one culture with another culture, it is a characteristic of that respective culture.  culture A cannot insist that what is in its culture is an absolute truth.  because everything that a culture has (be it rules, language, customs, etc.) is the best for the culture itself.  as well as other cultures.

3.  How do you define:

  • Mosaic is a technique in art which is made using colored chips such as stone, paper, glass, etc.  The pieces will later be put together by sticking them to paper media to form a work of art in the form of an image.
  • Melting pot is a metaphor for a heterogeneous society that is increasingly homogeneous.  The different elements "merge into one" as a harmonious cultural commonality.  This term is used to describe the assimilation of immigrants in the United States;  metaphors melting into one use in the 1780s.
  • Stereotypes are shortcuts or quick ways for someone to simplify complex things and help in making decisions quickly.
  • Prejudice is an opinion or statement that has not been proven true.  or prejudice can also be said as an accusation without any evidence.
